Welcome to Monschau

The holiday home An der Rur is an ideal starting point to explore Monschau and the beautiful surrounding countryside. In less than 2 minutes from the house you are in the middle of the nature. Here is a small selection of things to do:

  • Hikes: There are many beautiful hiking opportunities in the immediate vicinity (also from the house) - see below. We can recommend hiking up- and down the river Rur, also in the lovely side valleys or to Gut Reichenstein. The High Venn is a nearby high moor and offers many opportunities to explore the nature, e.g. behind Monschau-MÏ‹tzenich or Monschau-Konzen or a little further away in Botrange in Belgium.

  • Bicycle tours: In Monschau and the surrounding area is a bicycle network with a junction point system - a map is available from MonTouristik. The Vennbahnradweg is a relatively flat former railway line that has been developed for cycling, on which you can cycle in the direction of Belgium or Aachen.

  • Some recreational opportunities in the area are for example: a visit to the Hellental game reserve with a bird of prey show, Vogelsang Castle with two interesting exhibitions, the Rur reservoir with boat trips, the Eifel National Park with some information centres (e.g. in Monschau HÓ§fen), the attractive cathedral City of Aachen, a little further away the beautiful cities of Maastricht, Valkenburg or Cologne, the Phantasialand near Cologne, the NÏ‹rburgring is easily accessible or in the old town of Monschau - the Red House, exhibitions in the KUK, the local nature museum Lernort Natur, the glass blowing & sand sculptures in the craft market , a visit to the mustard mill (with registration), city tours through Monschau (with reservation) and the many small shops.

Our suggestions for short and long walks and hikes around Monschau

Around Monschau

  • Sonnenberg: There are fantastic views over Monschau and lots of sun from the Panoramaweg and the Haller ruin directly behind the holiday home. To go there, turn left when coming out of the front door and after 20 meters climb the stairs behind the Mon Bistro, then diagonally up to reach the Panoramaweg. A few hungry goats roam around there in the summer months. You can also simply enjoy the sun on the panorama trail. Because of the sun, the cloths from the cloth industry used to be dried there.

  • Kierberg: From the Kierberg there are also great views over Monschau. From the market place between Ristorante Fontana and Stadtkrone up the stairs to "Oberer Muehlenberg". From there, two narrow paths go steeply up past the cemetery and to a small chapel. Then either turn right at the benches or walk past the chapel and then turn right. Both paths lead steeply downhill back to the old town and offer beautiful views.

  • Monschau Castle: The third Monschau summit is the Monschau Castle. It is also very worthwhile because besides the castle there are also very impressive views over Monschau from here.

Beautiful tours in the surrounding nature without a car

  • Rur valley down-stream: We can highly recommend exploring the Rur valley downstream from Monschau leaving from the house (mountains, streams, deciduous forests). There are many nice possibilities - 1) Follow the Rur along to the garden cafe-restaurant Gruener Tal (the restaurant is beautifully situated but closed in winter). From there it continues through nature, either in the direction of Hammer or via the sleepy Widdau into the Holderbach valley or to the Belgenbacher mill in the direction of Imgenbroich or back to Monschau. 2) Up to the Kluckbach bridge, from there over the bridge to the saw mill. From there either back to Monschau or to Hoefen or to Rohren or to Widdau and onwards.

  • Rurtal up-stream: The Rurtal upstream is also beautiful. From the house it goes through Monschau, a little bit along the B258 to Dreistegen, then you can walk towards Gut Reichenstein on one side of the Rur and back on the other side of the Rur. There are also 3 bridges to shorten the tour. The tour can also be connected to other destinations.

  • Perlenbachtalsperre: From the house through Monschau to the craft market. From the car park it goes up steeply (first via a few steps) and take the second turn on the right and follow a very nice path, which then drops steeply to the Perlenau restaurant (unfortunately the restaurant on the Perlenbach has been closed for a long time). Turn left to the Perlenbachtalsperre or right along the Perlenbach back to Monschau. From the Perlenbachtalsperre you can continue to Hoefen and back to Monschau or further away from Monschau to the wild daffodil meadows in the Perlenbachtal and the Fuhrtsbachtal.

  • This just a small selection which we like walking from the house. Many other beautiful areas can be reached by car.
